S.A.S.H. Offers Low-Cost Food Delivery for Los Altos Seniors

For homebound seniors, it is often a challenge to obtain freshly prepared food, particularly when they are too frail to cook regularly or just want a culinary change of pace. Various volunteer groups and businesses offer several options, depending upon location, income, or other factors.

A new option is being added to the available options in the Los Altos area. In a recent article in the online Los Altos Town Crier, city public information Erica Ray discussed a new program for area seniors that is being launched this week.

Shopping Assistance for Seniors who are Homebound (S.A.S.H.) was scheduled to launch Monday as a trial program of the city of Los Altos Recreation and Community Service Department. Designed for homebound seniors in the Los Altos area, S.A.S.H. will provide low-cost home food delivery. The project is beginning on a small scale with cooked rotisserie chicken deliveries from Costco, but the city hopes to expand to delivery of additional foods, based on the level of participation and feedback received.

For now, rotisserie chicken orders can be placed on Mondays for Wednesday delivery. Requests will be accepted until all slots are filled for that week’s deliveries. To place their order, individuals can contact the Hillview Community Center each Monday between 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., at 947-2790. The charge for the food and delivery is $7 for members of the local center and $8 for nonmembers.
