4 Alzheimer’s Education Links Worth a Look

Did you know that September is World Alzheimer’s Month? On the last day of this month of recognition, we’d like to offer our readers several timely links on Alzheimer’s and dementia.

A recent Buzzfeed article, 10 Things You May Not Know about Alzheimer’s Disease, summarizes both statistical data and research information. One of the most striking facts: Almost two thirds of individuals in the U.S. diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease are female.

Last week, the AARP blog posted an interesting article, Will I Get Alzheimer’s? 6 Ways to Reduce the Risk. In addition to a discussion of prevention measures to take, the article featured a link to a free app that allows for crucial information on a parent or space to be organized and privately shared with family members or other caregivers. Whether medication information, appointment calendars, or needed tasks, vital information can more easily be at one’s fingertips.

Readers Digest recently featured an article that caught our attention: 7 of the Earliest Signs of Alzheimer’s. The article included information on the A4 study, a clinical trial for older adults who could be at risk for Alzheimer’s. The goal of the study is to prevent or delay memory loss associated with the disease, through early intervention.

Finally, we happened upon a fascinating and informative website, On Our Radar, that includes a unique project. Dementia Diaries, a British podcast series, documents the diverse experiences of individuals living with dementia, in their own words. Individuals with Alzheimer’s and other dementias were given phone recorders made with 3D printers and asked to record their thoughts about living with their disease. The results are both poignant and educational.

We can all benefit from more education about one of the country’s greatest health risks today. The above links provide small doses of learning that can have long-term benefits.
