Designated as Santa Clara County’s Area Agency on Aging, the private, nonprofit organization provides a variety of services to area seniors and caregivers. HCSCPA: A Guide to New Home Care Regulations

A newly implemented law is about to change the status quo for Californians who receive home care services, as well as their family and professional caregivers. The Home Care Services Consumer Protection Act (HCSCPA), voted into law over two years ago and signed by Governor Jerry Brown, became effective January 1, 2016. The legislation adds California to the list of 29 states that require licensure or certification of home care agencies. In a nutshell, HCSCPA provides for licensure and regulation of designated home care providers and their direct care employees. Once in each decade since the 1960s, The White House Conference on Aging has been convened. Designed to bring together older Americans, caregivers, family members, and advocates, the conference focuses on topics related to senior care, support, and independence. Two articles we recently read highlight the importance of medical alert systems, as well as how technology is working to decrease user resistance. Medical alert systems are used primarily around the home and can alert medical authorities to incidents ranging form heart attacks to falls.
